How Guided Imagery Helps Meditation
|
Many people mention the benefits of meditation. But sometimes people are not really specifically clear what meditation really is. Basically meditation is a way people can deal with medical problems, stress and anxiety. And they do it through positive thoughts and reflection.
Many people would actually picture backward people or monks doing meditation but actually it’s accepted and practiced now in many western countries and all around the world. More and more people have chosen to take the more natural way of enhancing their physical and mental well-being. There are many different types and practices of meditation but essentially meditation involves contemplation and deep reflection. In some types of meditation, the person is made to stay still all throughout the process. In others, controlled movements are allowed and in some, persons are also allowed to move about freely. But no matter what type of meditation one practices, the end goal really is to have a quiet and stress-free state of mind.
With the many techniques being practiced today one would have many choices to choose from but choosing can be difficult too. One good way to practice meditation is through guided imagery. With this technique one would experience a deeper and a more powerful meditation. Whether one is trying to quit smoking, lose weight, sleep better, heal or relax, guided imagery would be a powerful practice.
Remember that meditation is deeply rooted in using thoughts in healing or dealing with whatever issue a person wants to overcome. So is guided imagery. Guided imagery starts with the person aiming to achieve a deeply relaxed state. He or she practices slow in and out breathing until his or her mind becomes so relaxed and ready to proceed to the next phase of guided imagery which is the visualization process itself. Through the use of soothing and soft music or sounds of nature such as chirping birds or rolling waves, relaxation and the imagery is facilitated. The mood or the ambiance is set for the process.
Through a person’s mind or by thinking of accomplishing something, people actually become successful in changing their ways. They are able to quit smoking or sleep better. Others are even able to control pain and reduce it.
Guided imagery, most of the time, induces people to sleep. No matter how much one tries to stop himself from falling asleep, it’s most of the time inevitable. But one thing that makes this practice effective is the ability of the subconscious mind to continue to function even when a person is sleeping. In fact, guided imagery is a process which works when the person is deeply relaxed. It also helps one to learn to access his or her subconscious mind. By being able to do so a person is able to program his ways and habits using visualization.
Guided imagery is a very relaxing and a very beautiful experience. And there are many techniques available so one should not settle on just one technique or guide alone. One should try as many so as to find the one practice he or she can get the most from. And one other important thing to consider is to practice as often as possible because the more one does it the more effective it will be.
